Ask A Winemaker: Revisited

Muiris-Griffin-Winemaker-Round-Pond-Estate

Last year's "Ask a Winemaker" Series was such a success that we decided to dig a little deeper (with our own winemaker) and get some of our avid followers' questions answered.  Ranging from winemaking to life at home, Muiris is as candid as ever in this winemaker interview!

Q

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE  TRAVEL DESTINATION?

A

I would have to say Paris. It is just such a beautiful city, everywhere you go there is gorgeous architecture and amazing food and wine. If I was going to go back to France to live, it would be in Bordeaux, with its similar architecture (Paris was rebuilt in the image of Bordeaux after fires destroyed the city in 1666), but Bordeaux is smaller and more quaint, and obviously also has incredible food and wine.

Q

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE WINE STYLE? WHAT'S YOUR “GO TO” WINE?

A

I try not to have a specific style, I like a lot of very different wines.  I don’t want to develop too much of a singular palate where I only like a certain kind of wine.  As a winemaker, it’s really important to maintain diversity in my drinking line-up.  I suppose it’s situational, and luckily with all the different styles of wines I have to play with on our estate, I get to make a bunch of very different wines.

Q

[FAN QUESTION] HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE WORD "MINERALITY" WITHOUT THE ANALOGY OF "WET STONE"?

A

Ooooh, tough if I can't say wet stone (laughs).  For me it's aromatics and mouthfeel, so along with the wet stone, or clean steely notes, it's a freshness on the palate.  A crisp, precise, focused mid-palate.

Q

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT THE WINEMAKING PROCESS?

A

Harvest Time! The cellar fills with the smells of fermenting wine, and there’s just nothing like it!  I get chills every morning I walk in and smell those intense, musky aromas of fermentation.  It reminds me of every vintage I have ever made or helped to make, and I automatically recall those moments from Bordeaux or Opus (One) or Ridge (Vineyards).  It just brings me right back.

Q

[FAN QUESTION] WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO GO IN WINE COUNTRY?

A

There are so many great places to visit.  I have been checking out some of the new breweries starting up around the area.  Obviously, wine country is known for the amazing wines, but the beer is really good too!  My God-Brother started Tannery Bend in Napa, and it’s making some incredible stuff – everyone should check it out!

Q

IF YOU WEREN’T A WINEMAKER, WHAT WOULD YOU BE?

A

At this point, I really, really don't know. Miles (MacDonnell) fires me pretty regularly, and I'm pretty sure he's joking (laughs), but either way I'm not going anywhere! I just don't know what I would do with myself, this winemaking thing is way too much fun!
