7 Healthy Olive Oil Habits

What is it about cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil that is so special?  Very simply, cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil contains high amounts of monounsaturated fatty acids, polyphenols, and antioxidants that can help reduce the risks of heart disease and high blood pressure, some cancers, and act as a natural antibacterial.  Heat is the enemy of these helpful elements, and many oil producers will add heat to the oil production process to extract as much oil from the fruit as possible, but the result is the compromise and destruction of these natural powerhouses.

At Round Pond, we understand that freshness is fundamental to making truly superior extra-virgin olive oil. That is why we constructed our very own olive oil mill (one of only two in the Napa Valley). The truth is, the difference between everyday olive oil and oil freshly pressed in our mill is as obvious as the difference between orange juice from a carton and the vibrant flavor of fresh oranges squeezed into a waiting glass.  Brought to the Round Pond Mill only minutes after being picked from our estate orchards, our fruit offers enticing aromatics and ripe, warm Mediterranean flavors, with the monounsaturated fatty acids, polyphenols, and antioxidants that are so helpful to our bodies, intact.

Below, we have compiled our favorite unique ways to enjoy the delicious, potent goodness that cold-press extra virgin olive oil can bring to your healthy lifestyle!

7 Healthy Olive Oil Habits to Have

Start your day the Mediterranean way with a spoonful of Extra Virgin Olive Oil and the juice of half a lemon.  Taken first thing in the morning, this old-world elixir is said to lessen hunger pangs throughout the day and promote stomach health.

On offer at our Olive Mill is a very unexpected way to use an olive oil: drizzle a fruity, smooth extra virgin olive oil over a scoop of vanilla ice-cream and sprinkle with a little sea salt.  The flavors are amazing!

For you chocolate lovers, take a small square of premium dark chocolate and add a splash of a citrus olive oil like our Meyer Lemon or Blood Orange Olive Oils to enhance the spicy bite of the dark chocolate's finish.

Use our Italian Varietal Olive Oil in your Hummus recipe, or drizzle atop store-bought hummus to make it taste that much better (and healthier too)!

Olive Oil is a great substitute for butter!  Our Spanish Olive Oil shares a lot of the same taste features with butter: slightly sweet, creamy and - of course- buttery.   Instead of butter in your baking and cooking, try substituting butter with a high-quality olive oil.  On toast, try our Meyer Lemon or Blood Orange Olive Oil with honey & a dash of rose or lavender sugar.

Turmeric contains one of the world’s most powerful non-pharmaceutical anti-inflammatory compounds: curcumin.  To help the curcumin be absorbed easily into your system, you need the help of high-quality extra virgin olive oil and black pepper.  Since turmeric is fat-soluble, it needs a healthy fat like olive oil in which to dissolve for easy absorption by the intestines.  Mix 1/2 teaspoon each of olive oil and turmeric with a pinch of black pepper, and use in any dressing or drink diluted in water.

Drizzle our  Italian Varietal Extra Virgin Olive Oil on top of fresh-sliced mozzarella or feta cheese with a sprinkle of fresh basil or oregano. Serve alongside sliced pugliese or a baguette for a simple cheese plate.

A splash of your favorite olive oil on fruit salad or raw veggies adds a velvety coating that enhances their taste and adds a new dimension to their fresh texture.
